Art That Almost Never Was: The Ghost Paintings
If you're an artist, you know the feeling: that sudden burst of inspiration that sends you rushing to your studio, convinced you're about to create something truly special. I'm certainly no stranger to that feeling myself!
Sometimes it's a conversation with a customer that sparks an idea, or maybe it's a breathtaking view on a trip, or even something totally mundane that suddenly takes on a whole new meaning. The excitement is real, the intentions are pure... and then, somewhere along the way, the magic fizzles. The canvas sits unfinished, staring back at me with silent judgment. 🙈
The Art of the UNFINISHED!..
Anyone else have a graveyard of unfinished projects lurking in their studio? 🙋♀️ It's like a weird mix of guilt and "I'll get to it someday..." But here's the funny thing: sometimes the pieces I start with the least intention, the ones that just kind of emerge organically, are the ones I end up completing with the most satisfaction.
And then there's the whole mystery of which pieces actually resonate with others. The paintings I pour my heart and soul into sometimes get overlooked, while the ones I'm less attached to somehow find their way into collectors' homes. It's enough to make an artist question everything!
So, what's the deal? Why do some projects fizzle while others flourish? And why do the pieces we love sometimes get overlooked, while the ones we're less attached to fly off the shelves?
Honestly, I don't have all the answers. But here are a few thoughts:
Maybe it's the pressure of expectations. When we get super excited about an idea, we build it up in our minds, and it can be tough to live up to that initial vision.
Maybe it's the allure of the new. Shiny new ideas are always tempting, and it's easy to get distracted by the next exciting project before finishing the last one.
Maybe it's our subconscious at work. Perhaps those "accidental" paintings tap into something deeper, something we're not fully aware of, which is why they resonate with both us and our audience.
Or maybe it's just the mystery of taste. Art is subjective, and what appeals to one person might not appeal to another. It's impossible to predict what will resonate with buyers.
The good news is, those unfinished projects rarely stay that way forever. I often find myself revisiting them later with fresh eyes—sometimes weeks, sometimes months, even years later—and finally finding the inspiration to complete them.
And speaking of unfinished projects... this blog post is a perfect example! I actually started writing this last year 😂, but then, well, life happened. It's funny how things come full circle, isn't it? I'm officially in "finish those lingering projects" mode, and this blog post is proof! I even have another topic that's been sitting in my drafts since last year... it's next on my list. 😉
This whole experience has made me realize that the creative process is messy, unpredictable, and totally okay. It's all part of the journey, right?
